Updated Community Sport Concussion Guidelines

Concussion continues to be a common and under recognised injury within the community and semi-professional sporting setting, that has serious consequences long term if not managed safely. In the absence of a healthcare professional in these youth and community settings, the Australian Sporting Commission along with the Australian Institute of Sport have released Updated Community Sport Concussion Guidelines. The Guidelines specifically refer to those aged under 19 years old, and those who do not have access to a healthcare professional who can assist in assessment, diagnosis, and management.

The Key Takeaways from the Updated Guidelines are:

-       If in doubt, sit them out

-       Do not return to competitive sport until a MINIMUM of 21 days from the time of concussion

-       The person should be symptom free for 14 days prior to return to contact training - that is 14 days from when the person becomes SYMPTOM FREE, not from the time of concussion
